The Sea Hare

She glows down in the deep, the sea hare can see her, ready to rise, as the glowing orb of the sun hisses his way down into the waves, ready to sink and rest for the night. They will cross each other shortly, as the moon in her fullness rises from the depths and takes her place, Queen of the night sky, Empress of the stars.

The sea hare is different from her cousin on land, she is slower and rounder, but she is as much beloved of the moon. She feels the pull of the cycle deep in her body, dancing with the tides of the sea. She is gentle and kind, the sea hare, a softness in her that radiates out into the waves, basking near the surface and feeling the warmth of the world above.

She settles in and waits, ready for the magic that is about to unfold, as the golden sun sinks and the silver moon rises. The moon hovers for a moment, her curve touching the bottom of the waves, and the sea hare sways its ears in reverence. The moon smiles down on the sea hare, her beloved of the ocean, just as she has for millions of years. Content to see her hare below the water, the moon rises and bursts forth from the natal waters, a shimmering path laid out across the darkening surface of the sea, leading to her mysteries.

The sea hare waits until the moon has risen far above the ocean, receding into the warm dark night. She knows that on land her cousin, the field hare will take over the reverence of the moon, but still feels the love of the silvery queen shining down on her through the night.
